We are in an era where the concepts of sustainability and naturalness have turned into hollow marketing labels in the hands of the industry. Let us be brutally honest: that famous “100% Natural” tag adorning store windows does not always equate to quality or longevity. The fast-fashion industry, completely ignoring the harsh physical conditions the material will face in real life, presents the consumer with a rehearsed “greenwashing” illusion. Yet, true craftsmanship must not merely blindly cling to a popular ideology; it must rely on the honest engineering, the architecture, and the material’s suitability for its intended purpose.

The Dogma of Naturalness and the Unforgiving Physics of the Beach

Especially in summer collections and resort wear, the physical contact a fabric makes with nature is exceptionally harsh. The battle fought against the corrosive salt of seawater, the heavy chemical chlorine in pools, the dense texture of sunscreens seeping into the fabric, and the scorching rays of the sun is relentless. Under these severe conditions, a completely natural fiber rapidly loses its elasticity, absorbs water and becomes heavy, sags and loses its form, and surrenders its color to the sun in a short time. Accepting this transience—pieces sold solely on the claim of being “natural” but unable to withstand even a single season—under the guise of environmentalism is nothing more than indirectly supporting that very use-and-throw cycle.

A design that completes its lifespan so quickly and turns into waste is either incinerated or left to its fate in massive textile graveyards. No matter how “natural” the production process is labeled, every material that ends up in the trash after a short lifespan still exacts a heavy toll on nature indirectly.
